Traditional analog TV has an aspect ratio of 4:3, which means the screen is 4 inches wide for every 3 inches high. Widescreen HDTV format has an aspect ratio of 16:9. It is generally used along with the 720p(progressive scan)with 1280x720 resolution or 1080i (interlaced) 1920x1080 resolution. This technology allows the plasma hdtv to be only a few inches thick. They use phosphor coated screens, this creates the high risk of screen burn in. The plasma pixel cells can deteriorate over time causing the picture quality to diminish (fade).

Dlp or Digital Light Processing widescreen Hdtv's employ a new technology using microscopic mirrors or Digital Micromirror Devices (DMD). These are less expensive than LCD and Plasma Hdtv widescreens.

Front Projectors are typically used in home theaters. projected images can look great at up to 130".  Front projectors are available in all of the technologies CRT, LCD, DLP, LCOS and share their picture resolution qualities. exhibit advantages of each in the picture image characteristics and resolutions capability

Rear Projector Hdtv widescreen's also come in the different technologies. In sizes primarily ranging from 39"-80", 60" is typical today. These are very popular with the DLP rear projection and LCD/LCOS rear projection due to the lack of burn in concerns.
